Fantastic Final Regatta at Poole!

Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club travelled to Dorset, for the rerun of Poole’s annual regatta last weekend. The squad bowed out on a successful domestic season in some style, winning both the overall aggregate trophy for the most successful club, and the aggregate trophy for the junior events (under 16), both for the second season in succession.

In the Junior events, Shanklin enjoyed great success, winning 5 events, and giving a first regatta experience to many of our up-and-coming rowers. The Girls J14 Quad of Izzy Bounds, Layla Katirewa, Ella Haydon, Immy Burfitt, and Esme Walters (cox) stormed to victory, as did Layla Katirewa when she joined forces with Annabelle Steward in the Girls J14 Double Scull.

The girls J16 quad of Evie Crew, Theodora Travers, Rose Collier & Steward took the runners up spot whilst the boys squad won all three J16 events, with the Quad of Louis Sheasby, Carter Horrix, Daniel Page, Adam Farley, and Esme Walters (cox) winning convincingly. The crew then split up into small boats, with Page and Horrix triumphant in the Double Sculls, and Sheasby the Single Sculls races.

The club achieved two impressive wins in a day full of podiums in the regatta events, with the Ladies Junior Pair of Frances Katirewa and Beth Katirewa recording their second victory, forcing a row-off to decide the H&D title. In addition, the Ladies Senior Four of Daisy Faithfull, Emily Faithfull, Rachael Debenham, Phoebe Horan, and Esme Walters (cox) powered through to take a strong victory, whilst the Faithfull sisters also came second in the Women’s Senior Pair, also sending that championship to a row off.

Ethan Walters achieved a narrow second place in Senior Single Sculls pushing the championship winner all the way, and Frances Katirewa also battled it out to take second in Women’s Novice Sculls. The master’s 50+ crew of Andrew Tapsell, Kev Faithfull, Paul Gamble, Stella Gamble, and Jane Bailey (cox) recorded their best result of the season, also finishing in second spot, whilst other notable podium finishes included Rachael Debenham coming 3rd in Women’s Junior Sculls, as well as Matthew Page and Ethan Walters taking the bottom step of the podium in the Men’s Senior Pair.

The remainder of the squad achieved successful results in their heats, earning spots in the final. This included the Men’s Senior Four of Ethan Walters, Matthew Page, Horrix, Sheasby, and Esme Walters (cox), finishing a respectable fourth in a competitive senior men’s field. In addition, Fred Giemza-Pipe came 4th in Novice Men’s Sculls and the Junior Ladies Four of Esme Walters, Beth Katirewa, Frances Katirewa, Sophie Atkin, and Emily Faithfull (cox) finished a promising 5th, after a tough heat.

The club now turns its attention to the final regatta of the season, the prestigious South Coast Championships at Folkestone in two weeks.
